applied memetics
Oct 24 2007, 5:51 PM EDT I think what pax is saying is totally in line with what I'm saying. Starting a new cooperative/communal entity every year for the next 20 seems like a reasonably ambitious goal to set FOR MYSELF. Of course I want each one to be so benefical and satisfying that others want to do the same, and working on that will be part of the work of developing specific groups and the network as a whole. So, my question to pax as our memetics expert is, how do we that? How do we "design communities so compelling..."? What are the characteristics that we need to consider? 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

making communities sexy
Nov 15 2007, 8:18 PM EST my current thinking on memetic hooks (the parts of the cultural item that hold you to it) are a loose knit collection of thoughts from other disciplines. Specifically, from marketing we take understanding of the consumer/audience and filling a need. If you want to start a community every year the consumer is someone(s) willing to take a risk and to share at least a bit. The need you are filling is for something bigger than housing - i think it is life meaning and paradox reduction. Many cultural creatives know cars are bad but seem unable to step back from their relationship with them, making them feel slightly crazy. Twin Oaks does a good job of paradox reduction - but this is not enuf. From political organizing we know that the people are more important than the project. If you really want to spark new communities, you have to find the people who are attractive to others to join - charismatic types, high energy types. And in this you will be in competition with the mainstream economy which also wants these people and will make them nice financial offers. So the funologists remind us that it is life changing social events (parties/festivals /gatherings) which bring groups together for daring new ventures like starting communities. as always - we need to be building the better party. Do you find this valuable? |
